Physical Education

The physical education programme (primary curriculum) encourages children to engage, compete and co-operate with others in a fun and active way. Physical education also provides the means to build upon skills that are required for other subject areas. The development of self-esteem and confidence along with the ability to make informed decisions and to interact socially through play all contribute to the holistic development of the child.

The physical education programme provides the means whereby children are taught the necessary skills and knowledge that is needed to establish an active lifestyle. This is achieved through appropriate instruction, the provision of learning opportunities and meaningful content and through the sharing of new knowledge and ideas among staff.

Our school aims to provide a balance between competitive and non-competitive activities, opportunities for maximum participation by all children, the development of skills and understanding of activities experienced by the children through structured play along with opportunities for achievement for all children.

There are 6 strands in the P.E. curriculum:

-Athletics

-Dance

-Games

-Gymnastics

-Outdoor and Adventure

-Aquatics

Physical Education is allocated 60 minutes per week of overall teaching time.

5 out of the 6 strands are covered each year, with Aquatics lessons being taught from 1st to 6th class. All classes are taught the Land PAWS Water Safety Programme. Each strand of the curriculum is allocated a balanced amount of teaching time throughout the school year.
